Dr Luke Madden - Illawong Osteo & Chiro

About Dr Luke Madden

Director | Principal Osteopath

Dr Luke Madden started his journey into healthcare during his high school years. With a previous background in sports (Mixed Martial Arts), Dr Luke was always learning about how the body and its systems worked synergistically. Luke became an Exercise Specialist straight after High School and after specialising in rehabilitation, Dr Luke grew tired of hearing the same story of patients who don’t get better.

He then sold his companies and returned to university to become a Doctor of Osteopathy. He has built and sold 3 practices. Dr Luke now spends his time coaching private Health clinics to run more efficiently and profitably, growing his Illawong Private Practice & distributing his probiotic (which is 50x stronger than the market leader). About Illawong Osteo

Illawong Osteo started in 2014. Dr Luke Madden started his first practice with his wife Dr Melinda Madden in Miranda in 2009. They then expanded their practice to another location that had more room sand could help more people in their community. This also allowed them to bring on team members of both the osteopathic profession and other professions including Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Remedial Massage, Acupuncture, Clinical Pilates & Clinical Psychology.
After noticing a lot of new patients were coming to miranda from Menai, Illawong & Alfords Point, Luke decided that he would explore the option of opening another clinic closer to where he lived at the time (Menai). After meeting with a few practice owners, Luke decided to open up Illawong Osteo based out of Healthplus Illawong Medical Centre so that he could both service the community here and also collaborate with the medical team at the Doctors surgery.

Within 4 weeks of opening, Dr Luke and his team were packed with patients seeing what new techniques were offered and a different methodology to back pain and other musculoskeletal dysfunctions that presented to them daily. Illawong already had a physiotherapy practice and it was great to see a different style of treatment that was entirely hands on and took into account each patients entire health map. Dr Luke and his team focus on the larger picture of health. This moves beyond signs and symptoms of pathology and into overall health and wellbeing.

Osteopathy In Illawong. Chiropractic In Illawong. How Can It Help You?

Imagine if every joint in your body was moving as it was intended, and if the joints were stabilised well by the soft tissues (muscles, fascia and ligaments) supporting them. You wouldn’t really develop musculoskeletal pain at all, unless you experience an injury. So why do so many people experience aches and pains? – The problem lies in the fact that not many of us use our bodies as they were originally intended to be used. Running, swimming, climbing, carrying and throwing all day – that’s what our bodies were designed to do, but instead we sit, lay and stand in static unnatural positions that result in many joints stiffening up- leaving the remaining joints to do all the work. Lets take a look at the spine as an example.…

Your spine is made up of 33 vertebrae and many more joints. If all of these joints are moving well, then the workload that is taken on by these joints, is distributed optimally- it is shared around so that each joint plays its part and no joint is overworked or overloaded.

Problems arise when after years of prolonged sitting, standing, and bad postural habits result in many of these joints jamming up. While you’re only going about your regular activities you won’t notice anything is a problem at all, but when you try to lift something heavier than you usually do, or bend, twist or move in a way that you haven’t done for a while, all of the strain goes to the remaining joints that do move. If the strain is large enough or carried out on a repetitive basis, then you may end up with one or more of the common ‘degenerative’ conditions of the spine, or problems with a disc.

Osteopaths are trained to identify joints that don’t move properly, and to correct joint motion. By improving joint motion the workload of movement is once again ‘shared around’ all of your joints and muscles as is intended.
The Osteopathic approach has demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of:

  • Neck, back and shoulder pain
  • Muscle strains and spasms
  • Nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel, sciatica, and trigeminal neuralgia
  • Headaches, migraine and jaw pain
  • Arthritis and other joint conditions, and
  • Sporting injuries

Your first visit to Illawong Osteo & Chiro- What to expect

At your first session, your Osteo or Chiro will take your case history to establish when your pain first started, what your symptoms and concerns are and how they may have changed over time, the treatments (if any) you have received to date, and the impact your pain may be having on your life.
After learning of the history of your pain, your practitioner will carry out a hands-on examination, which comprises of various tests of the spine, nervous system, muscles and joints.
After identifying the underlying cause/s (which may or may not require referral for an x-ray, C-T scan or MRI), your practitioner will set some treatment goals, with the ultimate goal being to restore maximal, pain-free movement to your muscles and joints.
The osteopathy treatment techniques your Osteopath will use in fulfilling this goal include:

  • Spinal manipulation (Also known as an ‘adjustment’)
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Muscle energy technique (MET)
  • Soft tissue /massage
  • Counterstrain
  • Balanced ligamentous tension (BLT)
  • Myofacial release
  • Visceral manipulation
  • Therapeutic ultrasound
  • Exercises
  • Your treatment is not painful.

How Illawong Osteo & Chiro Are Different:
Unlike the conventional approach to medicine, which emphasises the use of pharmaceuticals to mask symptoms, osteopaths & chiropractors take the time required to establish a clear understanding of why your problem developed in the first place, and put into place a series of steps that will attempt to resolve the underlying problem.
